See, yoga nidra is known as "sleep yoga." It utilizes the sleep cycle which is something the body already knows how to do - to access slower brainwave states, move through the density of the body and BE as the energy you ARE - which results in deep healing. You intend, however, to stay awake and aware while the body rests. This allows your brain to downshift into slower states like theta and delta. Pure bliss!
Yoga nidra is a state of being. It is a guided meditative rest. Nidra is a delicious mash up of mindfulness, meditation and teeters beyond hypnosis to restore the mind body energy connection. Nidra easily offsets the overwhelm and exhaustion of modern day hustle-n- grind culture.
There's not much "doing" in nidra. In fact, it is known as the ART OF NON-DOING. Preparation for your experience is simple:
1. Choose a space n place where you feel safe, secure and will be relatively undisturbed.
2. Prepare by hydrating with quality water, going to the bathroom and silencing notifications.
3. Decide whether you'll sit, recline or lie down in savasana (corpse pose in yoga).
4. Get SUPER DUPER comfy n cozy.
5. Cover up with a blanket or coat because your body temperature will likely drop.
6. Simply LISTEN.
It is impossible to "do" yoga nidra wrong. This is because there is no right or wrong way to get comfortable or be in you in your body. Just BE. You'll be guided to notice and allow sensations. Breathe. REST. Enjoy silence and stillness to the degree that you choose. Merge into oneness and have your own yoga nidra journey. In my experience, every experience is different and beautiful in its own nidra kinda way.
